An unknown painter was probably active in Magdeburg or Halberstadt or in Bohemia around 1390. “The Martyrdom of a Female Saint” (St. Barbara or St. Catharine) The painting represents the last scene of the Martyrdom of a saint female of the royal origin. It might be St. Barbara, who was tortured and beheaded or St. Catharine of Alexandria. Provenance: - The painting probably belonged to the family (or close relatives) of the Emperor Charles IV. - Till 1917 the painting belonged to the collection of one of the most significant German collectors of old masters Richard von Kaufmann in Berlin - In 1938 it was taken out to New York by Waldes family Exhibited: - The Metropolitan Museum of Art New York, the exhibition “Prague, The Crown of Bohemia, 1347–1437“, from September 20, 2005 till January 3, 2006, item No. 99 - The Prague Castle, the exhibition “Charles IV. – The Emperor from God’s Blessing. Culture and Arts under the Rule of Luxembourgs. 1310–1437”, from February 16 till May 21, 2006 - Till 2008 it was a long term loan at the permanent exhibition The Medievel Art in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (No. L. 2003.9)
