Short item description
Published: Jean Cassou, Denise Fedit – KUPKA, Gallery Karl Flinker, 1964, full-page 50–51 (the book with the picture) Exposed: Gallery Karl Flinker, 1964 Certificate: Pierre Brulle This work is the uncommon and unexceptionable study to one of Kupka’s most significant pictures – Abstract painting (National Gallery Prague). While in our picture Kupka calibrates it’s composition by using colours, in the final realisation he resigns colours using three lines only. This study is mentioned also in the publication for an occasion of Kupka’s exhibition in 1968, published by the National Gallery Prague. Ms. Ludmila Vachtová wrote: “ The problem of harmony and three-dimensional orientation of surfaces, which went along the whole cycle of Vertical plans, comes to the terminal limiting here. With respect to this consequentiality it is one of the most significant pictures of the whole Kupka’s work… The quache study which foregos this picture, published in Ms. D. Féditová’s book Kupka, publisher Gert Hatje, page 50, is similar in its resolution in conversed aspect ratio.”
